HOLY MONDAY

MONDAY, APRIL 14, 2025

The Book of Common Prayer offers us this Collect Monday in Holy Week.

Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

(BCP pg. 168)

HOLY TUESDAY

TUESDAY, APRIL 15, 2025

The Book of Common Prayer offers us this Collect Tuesday in Holy Week.

O God, by the passion of thy blessed Son didst make an instrument of shameful death to be unto us the means of life: Grant us so to glory in the cross of Christ, that we may gladly suffer shame and loss for the sake of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

(BCP pg. 168)

HOLY WEDNESDAY

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16, 2025

The Book of Common Prayer offers us this Collect Wednesday in Holy Week.

O Lord God, whose blessed Son our Savior gave his back to the smiters and hid not his face from shame: Grant us grace to take joyfully the sufferings of the present time, in full assurance of the glory that shall be revealed; through the same Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

On Maundy Thursday, we gather in community to accompany Jesus and the disciples through the final hours leading up to the Cross. Honoring Jesus’ commandment to love one another, we wash each other’s feet and share the bread and wine of the Eucharist. Afterwards, the altar is stripped of all adornments and Sacrament is processed to an “altar of repose” outside the sanctuary, where all are welcome to keep watch with Jesus at an all-night, online prayer vigil. The service does not end, but continues seamlessly into Good Friday.

We'd love to have you join us for supper. Please click HERE to let us know how many will attend.

On Good Friday the church makes present the depth of God’s love for the world, unveiled in Jesus’ passion and death. We recall the prophet Isaiah’s praise of God’s suffering servant and solemnly proclaim the story of Jesus’ trial and death as told in the gospel of John. We then join our prayer to Christ’s own and lift up the needs of all the world. Finally, we gather to venerate the cross, the shape of our own share in God’s love for the world.

HOLY SATURDAY MORNING PRAYER

SATURDAY, APRIL 19, 2025

Morning Prayer

9:00AM in-person

St. Lawrence Episcopal Church

125 West Church St.

Libertyville, IL 60048

The Saturday after Good Friday, which recalls the day when the crucified Christ visited among the dead while his body lay in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea. In the Episcopal Church there is no eucharist on Holy Saturday. The Book of Common Prayer provides a simple liturgy of the word with collect and readings for the Holy Saturday service. In the ancient church, those preparing for baptism and perhaps others continued the fast they began on Good Friday. Holy Saturday ends at sunset. Fasting and other preparations end at sunset or with the Easter Vigil, which begins the celebration of Easter.

The Great Vigil of Easter is the pinnacle of the Christian liturgical year, and the final service of the Triduum. It is an ancient rite with fire, the great stories that shape our faith, the water of baptism, and the celebration of Eucharist. In this service, the mystery of Easter comes alive, and we are a part of it.

Please join us for a reception immediately following the service.
